Mens dog tags started out, not as jewelry, but as a means to identify soldiers on the battlefield in case of bodily injury or death. Dog tags were called such, because they resembled the tags that could be found on one's pet, namely, the family dog. Since WWI or sooner, dog tags have typically been made of silver tin or aluminum and strung on a ball chain around a service member's neck. Some form of dog tags have been used, during wartime, as far back as the 1800's. Though, originally issued to all military personnel and required to be worn at all time, dog tags have evolved from tin or aluminum pieces of identification to jewelry worn for personal enjoyment.
Today, dog tags are more than a symbol of being in the Armed Forces. Dog tags are now seen as appropriate to wear by normally jewelry-averse men. Due to their obvious connection with the military, dog tags are seen as a sort of status symbol; as if they elevate the wearer to that of "warrior".
Traditionally, dog tags are silver in color, regardless of materials used to manufacture them. Dog tags typically come in a set of two. Because dog tags tend to make a lot of noise as they swing around the wearers neck, silencers were developed to keep them from chiming. Silencers are sleeves that go around the outside of the dog tag to keep them from making noise as the wearer moves.
Dog tags worn for fashion purposes range from silver, gold, and even gem-encrusted. Unlike traditional dog tags that merely identify the wearer by name, rank, and serial number, fashionable dog tags tend more to identify the character of the man wearing them, based on the designs or logos a man chooses to sport. Typically, fashion dog tags do not have silencers, but there are some styles that may incorporate them into their design.
Fashion dog tags can range in price from inexpensive to expensive, depending on the manufacturer. Fashion dog tags can be custom-made to suit the taste and desires of the wearer. Dog tags make a great gift idea for men whether soldier or civilian. Regardless of cost or taste, dog tags can be made to fit any style and budget.
Dog tags have come a long way from their military origins. Fashion dog tags may not identify the wearer by name, but they can help a man identify his personal style.
